Those Lovely Locks
Asheville’s only wax and chemical-free dreadlocking studio! We work on hair types of all sorts and of all cultures. That being said, we do believe that it is important to understand that the feelings of those who believe dreadlocks on people who are not black is cultural appropriation are valid and should be considered. It is a complex topic that is not as simple as yes or no, as there is not one right answer for everyone. Jazmin, the owner of Those Lovely Locks has written an article to help guide your decision. You can read that HERE. As the article explains, we ask our clients who are not black to not refer to their hair as dreadlocks. Matted hair is common in all cultures, but not all cultures refer to them as dreadlocks. We feel that this goes a long way to give dignity and respect to those who feel that using the word for all matted hair makes it hard to preserve and protect black cultures and hair.
